THE PROCESS

Surface Preparation

Surface Preparation

Surface Preparation

surface preparation of a basketball court, pressure washing and acid etching the surface to paint

The foundational step involves cleaning and preparing the existing base. Depending on the condition and material (concrete or asphalt), this may include pressure cleaning, acid etching, sanding/grinding, crack repairs, or joint filling to create an optimal surface for subsequent layers.

Bonding coat

Surface Preparation

Surface Preparation

Applying bond coat and waterproofing a concrete slab for surfacing and painting

For surfaces utilizing a concrete base, a specialized bonding coat is applied. This critical layer ensures that all subsequent acrylic materials adhere correctly to the concrete slab, which can also include waterproofing elements.

Base Coat

Surface Preparation

Colour Coats

If the underlying surface is asphalt or has imperfections, one or more base coats are applied. This step is essential for filling porous areas and achieving a perfectly level and smooth foundation before the final colour application.

Colour Coats

Colour Coats

A minimum of two acrylic colour coats is applied to achieve uniform and dense colour coverage. Lighter colours like yellow may require additional coats. MQ Surfacing uses high-quality materials, such as Mapei acrylics, to ensure a vibrant and lasting finish.

Line Marking

The final functional step involves applying precise line markings for the specific sport(s) required (e.g., tennis or basketball lines). The company uses the same non-slip, safety-conscious materials as the colour coats to maintain consistency and player safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions regarding tennis court resurfacing generally focus on timing, costs, and the technical aspects of the process.
Please reach us at mqsurfacing@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

  • How often should a court be resurfaced?

A new acrylic sports surface from MQ Surfacing typically lasts 10 years before it requires a fresh resurfacing. With exceptional care and low usage, some private courts can remain in good condition for even longer.

The exact longevity of your surface is influenced by several key factors:

  • Usage Levels: High-traffic areas like schools or public stadiums will experience faster wear and fading compared to private backyard courts.
  • Initial Construction: A high-quality, level base (concrete or asphalt) with proper drainage is essential. Poor drainage can lead to premature surface degradation or bubbling.
  • Maintenance Habits: Regular cleaning—including sweeping debris and occasional professional pressure washing—prevents abrasive dirt from wearing down the acrylic.
  • Climatic Conditions: Intense UV exposure can cause colours to fade over time, while extreme temperature fluctuations can stress the bond between the surface and the base.

To maximize your investment, it is recommended to have the court professionally inspected every few years to address minor cracks or drainage issues before they require more extensive repairs.

  • How long does the process take?

A standard resurfacing project typically takes between 5 and 14 days, though the actual duration can vary based on several factors:

  • System Choice: Advanced or multi-layered systems may require additional time for application and curing.
  • Court Condition: Courts requiring extensive repairs, such as deep crack filling or base leveling, will naturally take longer than those in good condition.
  • Weather: Acrylic surfacing is weather-dependent; rain or high humidity can delay the drying process of each layer.
  • When is the best time of year to resurface?

It is ideal to schedule work during mild, warm temperatures. Extreme cold or high heat can prevent materials from curing correctly.

  • What are the telltale signs of wear?

Common indicators include visible cracks, water pooling (birdbaths), fading colours, surface bubbling, and a loss of traction.

  • Can resurfacing fix deep cracks?

While surface-level cracks can be repaired with acrylic patching compounds, deep structural or foundational issues may require a full reconstruction.

MQ Surfacing specializes in repairing and "bringing back to life" old, neglected courts. It is rare for a surface to be so far gone that it cannot be restored.

We provide specific solutions for various types of damage:

  • Crack Repair: We can patch surface cracking to prevent further deterioration.
  • Surface Issues: We address peeling, delaminating, or bubbling of the existing acrylic.
  • Levelling: For courts with water ponding (pooling), We apply patches or base coats to level the surface.
  • Cleaning: If a court just looks tired, We offer deep pressure washing and acid etching to revitalize its appearance.

If a court is truly beyond repair, the company offers alternative options depending on the specific circumstances. We recommend an on-site inspection to assess the base and provide a tailored plan for restoration.

  • System Choice: Advanced or multi-layered systems may require additional time for application and curing.
  • Court Condition: Courts requiring extensive repairs, such as deep crack filling or base levelling, will naturally take longer than those in good condition.

Weather: Acrylic surfacing is weather-dependent; rain or high humidity can delay the drying process of each layer.

  • How much does it cost?

Basic resurfacing for hard courts in Australia typically ranges from $12,000 to $15,000, though premium upgrades like cushioned layers or extensive repairs can increase the price significantly.

MQ Surfacing also offers several types of rubberised and specialty surfaces designed for comfort, safety, and durability:

  • Standard Rubberised Surfaces: These are available for various applications where a more cushioned feel is desired compared to traditional hardcourts.
  • Cushioned Acrylic Systems: We provide liquid-applied "cushion" layers that integrate with the acrylic finish to reduce joint impact during play.
  • Hardened Specialty Acrylics: For areas where vehicle traffic is unavoidable, we offer hardened versions of their surfaces to provide extra strength and prevent damage.

For detailed specifications or to determine which system is best for your specific project, you can contact them through the MQ Surfacing website.

  • Can I change the colour or layout?

Yes. Resurfacing is an ideal time to choose new colours or add lines for other sports like pickleball, basketball, or netball to create a multi-use area.

MQ Surfacing can provide a wide array of vibrant colours for your court, ranging from standard options to custom designs. We use quality Mapei acrylic products, which offer a large palette of colours to suit any aesthetic preference, including many classic "tennis court" blues and greens.

The available Mapei colours include, but are not limited to:

  • Blues: Light Blue, Sea Blue, Dark Blue, Night Blue, Byron Blue, Royal Blue, Ocean Blue, US Open Blue, Melbourne Blue, New York Blue, Sydney Blue.
  • Greens: Grass Green, Light Green, Mid Green, Sea Green, Apple Green, Dark Green, Forest Green, London Green, Rio Green.
  • Reds/Pinks: Red, Light Red, Swiss Red, Paris Red, California Red, Terracotta, Tan, Light Pink, Powder Pink, Pink.
  • Greys/Neutrals: White, Light Grey, Dark Grey, Mid Grey, Cape Grey, Sable, Platinum Grey.
  • Yellows/Oranges/Browns: Yellow, Sunshine Yellow, Ochre, Arena Yellow, Orange, Rainbow Orange, Brown, Canyon Brown, Winter Brown, Outback Clay.
  • Purples: Lilac, Violet, Tour Purple, Miami Purple.

Line markings are typically added in a contrasting colour like white or yellow to ensure visibility for gameplay. MQ Surfacing emphasizes their ability to work with you to bring any desired colour combination to life.

  • When can I play again?

Depending on the system used, owners should understand it will take 3 to 8 days to allow the materials to fully cure before heavy use.

In most cases, you can use your newly surfaced court on the same day that MQ Surfacing completes the work. While the surface is typically ready for immediate play, there are a few exceptions to keep in mind:

  • Standard Wait: Most clients can begin play immediately after completion.
  • Extended Curing: On rare occasions, you may be advised to wait up to 24 hours to ensure the acrylic and line markings have fully set.
  • Weather Impact: High humidity or low temperatures during the final application stages can sometimes extend this drying period.

Your on-site MQ Surfacing technician will provide a final confirmation once the last coat is finished.

  • How do I extend the life of the surface?

Regular maintenance, such as annual pressure washing, removing debris, and ensuring proper drainage, is essential to maximize the 10-year lifespan.

MQ Surfacing offers professional cleaning services as part of our specialized maintenance and repair programs.

Their cleaning services include:

  • Pressure Cleaning: We provide deep pressure washing (high-pressure water cleaning) to remove built-up dirt, grime, and pollutants that can dull a surface over time.
  • Revitalization: Services are designed to bring old or neglected surfaces back to a "like new" look and peak playability.
  • Specialized Treatments: As part of our broader surface care, we address common issues like mould, moss, and algae growth during the cleaning process.

Free Inspections: You can contact us to inspect your court; We will assess its condition and provide a plan to restore it.
